Dog Collars: Nylon vs Cotton

Choosing a proper dog collar is one of the most important, and earliest decisions you’ll make for your pet. Whether it’s a new puppy’s first collar or a replacement for a dirty or ill-fitting collar, you’ll want to make sure your dog is safe, comfortable, and secure when wearing it. PawPicked is here to give you the rundown on the two most commonly used types of collars on the market today, nylon and cotton.

There are pros and cons to both nylon and cotton webbing. For some it comes down to a matter of lifestyle and for others about peace of mind.

Nylon Webbing

Nylon webbing is the more durable of the two. It is also more water friendly than cotton webbing. Another benefit is that the strength of nylon webbing is unmatched when is it comes to dog collars. With a tensile strength of up to around 5,500 pounds per 1” width it is not likely to break. Like all collar types, nylon collars will begin to show signs of wear over time. The color may begin to fade or the edges of the collar may show signs of fraying.

Cotton Webbing

Cotton webbing is another great, more eco-friendly alternative to nylon webbing, which takes longer to naturally breakdown. Another point to note is that, cotton webbing collars also tend to be less expensive than other types of webbing. However, cotton is also somewhat less durable and may be best suited for smaller dogs or less active dogs due to this weaker strength. Cotton collars do not dry quickly so if your dog like to swim then you may want to opt for a nylon or BioThane collar.
